RVEL becomes train operator

23 February 2016/Categories: CILT, Industry News, Active Travel & Travel Planning, Rail, Transport Planning

RVEL, a Loram company, has been granted a Safety Certificate and Non-passenger Train Licence by the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) allowing the company to operate non-passenger services.

The initial Safety Certificate, covering a period of five years, will allow RVEL to operate trains between the Derby RTC and Old Dalby test track in support of its existing engineering and re-engineering business. RVEL hopes to operate its first train along this route in mid 2016.

RVEL’s decision to apply for a Non-passenger Train Licence follows the company’s acquisition by US company Loram in 2014. Loram are world leaders in train based rail-head treatment services.

In preparation for the grant of this Licence and Safety Certificate RVEL has re-organised and strengthened its Board.

Led by managing director Andy Lynch, the RVEL Board is now structured as follows:
  • Andy Houghton, Commercial Director
  • Peter Erwin, Operations Director;
  • Paul Riley, Engineering Director;
  • David Rogers, Finance Director;
  • Rupert Brennan Brown, Communications Director;
  • Gary Stewart, Safety and Assurance Director

Gary Stewart joined RVEL in 2015 from Northern Rail and he has played a significant part in ensuring that RVEL’s Safety Management System met the Office of Rail and Road’s exacting standards prior to the ORR granting RVEL a Safety Certificate.

Andy Lynch, managing director of RVEL said: “We are delighted that the Office of Rail and Road has granted RVEL a Non-passenger Licence and Safety Certificate.

“The ORR Safety Team has demanded evidence of the very highest standards of compliance from RVEL prior to granting this operating documentation and I am enormously proud of my team for meeting ORR’s exacting standards.

“This is the start of RVEL’s journey as a train operator, and we look forward to growing our capability to meet our customers’ and the industry’s needs over the coming years.”
