Stratton Green railway bridge has reopened

29 February 2016/Categories: Industry News

The bridge over the railway in Stratton Green in Swindon has been reopened after it was closed for work to ready it for electrification.

Having been finished on time, the bridge will now be able to receive a new fleet of electric trains that will pass through the area every day.

The reconstruction work that went into this bridge was a large part of Network Rail's £40 billion Railway Upgrade Plan to provide a bigger and more reliable railway for its customers.

Work began on the Stratton Green bridge at the end of 2015 and formed part of the Great Western Electrification Programme.

The changes have included creating additional space for the overhead lines that will be used to power the new fleet of trains, the installation of vehicle barriers to ensure the safety of drivers, tarmacking and adding in road markings and reinstalling the street lights.

Andy Haynes, Network Rail's project director for the west of England, said: "Now the bridge has reopened, residents and businesses in Swindon are a step closer to the benefits that electrification and the new electric trains will bring."

Some of these benefits include faster trains with more seats, less noise and cleaner air, and the promotion of economic growth in the south-west.
