Passengers on trains are suffering in the south-east of England, as three different bridges were hit by vehicles that were too high to travel underneath them.

All of this took place within a 12-hour period and now Network Rail and the train operators are appealing to HGVs to drive more carefully around low bridges to avoid further delays.

One of the bridges was in Tulse Hill in London, which caused problems for those who were using Thameslink. Grosvenor Road Bridge and a bridge near Orpington station were also struck, leading to difficulties for South and Gatwick Express, and Southeastern customers respectively.

Speaking on the issue, Network Rail's route managing director Alasdair Coates said that despite ensuring low bridges have the correct signage, passengers continue to be affected by vehicles hitting them.

He commented: "With a railway network as busy and complex as ours in the south-east, knock-on delays can spread very quickly and far from the site of the original incident. I urge hauliers and drivers to please be more careful."
