The University of Hull is set to host one of Europe’s leading conferences for research into logistics and supply chains.

The Logistics Institute at the University has been chosen as the venue for this year’s Logistics Research Network (LRN) Annual Conference and PhD Workshop.

Now in its 21st year, the conference is a forum for presenting research results, current practice and new ideas in supply chain management, logistics and transport.

The theme for this year’s conference is ‘Doing the Right Thing – Ethical Issues in Logistics and Supply Chain’.

The three-day conference will be chaired by Professor David Menachof, holder of the Peter Thomson Chair in Port Logistics at the Logistics Institute.

Professor Menachof said: “This is the premier UK event for academics sharing logistics and supply chain research and is a focal point of the year for the research community.

“There will be more than 90 presentations from experienced faculty members along with keynote speakers from industry looking at research applications and practice.”

Professor Amar Ramudhin, Director of the Logistics Institute, said:  “While people are doing a lot of research on sustainability and how to reduce costs and be more efficient, the ethical issues are just catching up.

“However, with companies increasingly conscious of their corporate social responsibilities, it’s an issue that is growing in importance.

“Companies are trying to make sure they source in an ethical and sustainable way. Ethics in mainstream supply chains are now a big part of CSR.

“Getting together to look at what companies are doing and research areas that need to be looked at is really important.”

Kevin Richardson FCILT, Chief Executive, CILT, said: “The Institute’s LRN Conference is one of the largest forums for the presentation and discussion of research, best practice and new ideas in the field of logistics.

“The conference is in its 21st year and we are pleased to be partnering with the University of Hull for 2016. Delegates will be attending from across the world and this is the premier event for all academics, researchers and practitioners working in logistics and the supply chain. I look forward to seeing everyone there.”

The conference runs from Wednesday, September 7, to Friday, September 9.

Authors wishing to prepare a paper for the conference are invited to submit a 500-word abstract for consideration by the organising committee.

The deadlines for abstract submissions is April 1. Authors will be informed by May 3, 2016, whether their paper has been accepted. Final papers need to be received by June 10.

A PhD Workshop will take place on the morning of Wednesday, September 7, and is aimed at doctoral students or those about to embark upon doctoral studies.

The workshop provides an opportunity to network with students from national and international universities; share the challenges of doctoral training with like-minded peers and benefit from the experiences of leading supply chain logistics scholars.

The workshop will be facilitated by Dr Liz Jackson of the Royal Veterinary College, and David Grant, Professor of Logistics at Hull University Business School

Professor Ramudhin added: “It’ll be interesting to see what PhD researchers are working on and discuss how we can get more young people interested in the logistics and supply chain sector.”
