The 130-year-old Severn Tunnel in South Wales is set to close for six weeks from the middle of September to upgrade it for electrification.

Brand new electric trains will result in more seats and faster journeys for passengers in the area.

This is critical work to improve overall reliability of the service and the station will be closed between September 12th and October 21st to allow these upgrades to be effectively carried out.

Benefiting from the changes will be those who travel into and out of South Wales, including passenger from London, Portsmouth Harbour and the south-west of England.

The work is part of Network Rail's £40 billion Railway Upgrade Plan and the electrification of the Severn Tunnel will not only improve journeys, but it will also deliver an economic boost to South Wales.

Improvements to the economy in the area will be thanks to the region's improved connectivity to the UK capital, which is important for attracting inward investment.

Rob Mullen, GWR general manager central, added: "Electrification will also deliver a greener and quieter railway, resulting in cleaner air and a reduction in the noise for those living near the railway."
