Malcolm Shepherd retires as Sustrans Chief Executive

06 April 2016/Categories: CILT, Industry News, Active Travel & Travel Planning, Transport Planning

Malcolm Shepherd CBE has retired as Chief Executive of Sustrans after 21 years of service, with eight of those as Chief Executive.

We at Sustrans are incredibly proud of everything that his leadership has enabled us to achieve in this time. He’s overseen some fantastic projects, from Connect2 to the expansion to the National Cycle Network from 500 to 14,000 miles, from our innovative street kit to Sustrans Superheroes.
Great achievements from Malcolm’s time include:

Our work with children

By July 2015 we’d worked with over 10% of schools across the UK; in the last year alone that’s over 500,000 children.

In 2014 15% of the total number of trips on the National Cycle Network were made by children.

Our work with communities

By transforming the space outside people’s front doors we make walking and cycling convenient as soon as they step outside.

In the last year alone we’ve worked in a dozen communities and over 100 streets, benefiting the hundreds of people who live there and many more who travel through.

The National Cycle Network

In 1995 Sustrans received a grant from the newly launched National Lottery to create the National Cycle Network. In 2015 we celebrated its 20th anniversary.

The Network now sees three quarters of a billion journeys in a year, made by nearly five million people.
75% of the UK population now lives within two miles of the Network. It’s a public space that serves many people, with different needs, often at the same time.

In 2015, people choosing to walk and cycle their local journeys on the Network saved a potential 435,612 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

Malcolm will continue to support Sustrans as a volunteer, joining a community of 4,000 others across the UK.

Xavier Brice will become our new Chief Executive in June 2016.

Xavier has a wealth of experience in public transport, working for the past ten years in a number of roles for Transport for London. This most recently involves leading the Fit for the Future Stations programme, the biggest change to London Underground for a generation.

He also designed a new cycling strategy for London, which led to the introduction of the Cycle Superhighways and Cycle Hire Scheme.

Operations Director, Andy Wistow, will be acting as interim CEO until Xavier joins us in June.
