Preparatory work for HS2 hub in Crewe commences

07 April 2016/Categories: Industry News

Preparatory work on what form an HS2 super-hub station in Crewe might take has begun.

According to Network Rail, work on initial designs is currently underway. A spokesman said it will be designed in a way that supports both regional and HS2 services.

However, the representative stressed to the Crewe Chronicle that the hub is still in the early stages of development.

"HS2 will offer significant benefits for passengers on the existing rail network through better connectivity and new journey options," the spokesman commented.

Rachel Bailey, leader of Cheshire East Council, added that it is working closely with Network Rail and HS2 Limited on the concept of a hub station for HS2 at Crewe.

"I would like to stress that we are not expecting a decision on this until the autumn but we endorse the preparatory work being undertaken by Network Rail, Department for Transport and HS2 in exploring design options," she said.

The first phase of HS2 will link London and Birmingham by 2026, while the hub at Crewe forms part of the second phase, with links to Leeds and Manchester that should be up and running by 2033.
