A water tunnel that collapsed near Howden and resulted in the closure of the A614 is going to be rebuilt over the next few weeks, and will reopen the road.
The culvert, which carries water alongside the railway and under the road, suffered a partial collapse last Thursday 14th April during the early morning hours.
Unfortunately, this saw both of the road's carriageways close immediately. However, the railway was far enough away not to be affected by the damage of the collapse.
It isn't certain what caused the issue, but work has already begun to fix and replace the tunnel with a new structure, with its reopening date scheduled within five weeks.
In a bid to get this issue fixed as quickly as possible and cause the least amount of disruption, it's hoped that Network Rail will be able to open part of the road sooner to allow single-lane traffic to go through the area.
Mar Tarry, area director for Network Rail, which owns the structure, said: "Safely carrying out structural repairs to tunnels like this one is something we are very experienced in and work has already started to get the tunnel rebuilt and the road reopened."
