UK beef and lamb to get US export opportunity

26 April 2016/Categories: Industry News

It looks like UK beef and lamb producers are on track to gain access to the US market - valued at £60 million.

News has broken on this following trade talks between the UK environment secretary Elizabeth Truss and US secretary of agriculture Tom Vilsack, reports Food Manufacture.

Inspections will be made into UK beef and lamb plants after the various paperwork is examined and processed.

Ms Truss said: "I want to see British burgers, steaks and lamb chops on American tables. Our farmers are a step closer to providing world-class beef and lamb to 300 million Americans."

The discussions between the two markets mirror the continuing negotiations regarding the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), which aims to make it easier for businesses to trade between Europe and America.

If this is successful, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs believes that the deal with TTIP could see a £500 million spike in the value of UK food and drink exports to the US.
