DHL completes successful "Parcelcopter" trial

10 May 2016/Categories: Industry News

Logistics company DHL has just completed a three-month trial of its new "Parcelcopter", which the company says was a resounding success.

The device has been used to deliver and collect parcels from a pack station that the company has called its Parcelcopter Skyport, reports Logistics Manager.

In order to test the flying delivery method, it was trialled in Reit im Wink in Bavaria and saw customers able to insert their shipments into the Skyport to receive automated delivery by the Parcelcopter.

During the three months testing period, a total of 130 loading and offloading cycles were successfully carried out.

Although this was the first trial of its kind, the Parcelcopter was actually an upgrade of a similar product that had been used by DHL previously.

However, the new device was used to enable the company to cope with heavier loads and farther and more difficult distances. One of these included an alpine region, which is known for posing challenges regarding the weather and its location.
