The UK supply chain wastes 1.9 million tonnes of food and drink a year, according to a study from registered charity WRAP.

New research uncovered by the company found that over half of the food waste that's generated by UK manufacturing is avoidable.

In fact, the charity says that by redistributing surplus food and converting it into animal feed this could see a 42 per cent reduction in the amount of food and drinks that the supply chain wastes.

An infographic by WRAP states that 1.1 million tonnes of the waste is completely avoidable, which is worth £1.9 billion in sales for businesses in these industries.

Currently, the food and drink sector is throwing away around £300 million every year thanks to waste products.

Dr Richard Swannell, WRAP director, said: "Through a combination of prevention, redistribution to people and diversion to animal feed, the grocery supply chain could, in the next ten years, almost halve its avoidable food waste."
