Blackwall Tunnel to be resurfaced after spillage

25 May 2016/Categories: Industry News

The Blackwall Tunnel is closed after a large amount of fuel and hydraulic fluid was spilled yesterday (24th May).

Unfortunately, the spillage covered three-quarters of the length of the tunnel, which spans over a kilometre of the area.

Damage caused by the spill means that the carriageway needs to be resurfaced immediately to make it safe for the drivers in the tunnels.

The drivers in the area have been advised to avoid the area while the tunnel is being resurfaced and motorists are being diverted to use slip roads.

Garrett Emmerson, Transport for London's chief operating officer for Surface Transport, said: "We apologise to drivers and bus passengers who have been affected by today's closure of the northbound Blackwall Tunnel and we are working hard to resurface the road as quickly as possible."

He added that the spillage was caused by a crane that was carried on a lorry and an investigation into the incident is to follow.
