Councils win £21m of funding to promote green transport

25 May 2016/Categories: Industry News

Throughout England, councils have won almost £21 million of funding from the government in order to help them promote greener forms of transport.

Money will be given towards the instigation of 23 travel initiatives across the country that will boost local economies and offer cheap, clean and healthy travel options, according to the Department for Transport.

Robert Goodwill, transport minister, said: "The schemes will make a real difference for residents and help provide better air quality for everyone.

"Our £21 million funding shows we are committed to improving lives through investment in sustainable transport."

It's hoped that these initiatives will help people to find better ways of travelling to and from their jobs and educational sites.

The funding continues the government's commitment to finding greener methods of transport, as it currently already spends £300 million on supporting cycling and walking.

Similarly, more than £6 billion is going to be given to the upkeep of road maintenance to benefit both motorists and cyclists.
