New transport career drive encourages young women

21 June 2016/Categories: Industry News

There has never been a better time for young people to consider a career in transport.

That’s the message from Transport for London and 270 other organisations volunteering time and energy to highlight the rewards of working in the transport industry to 11-16 year olds.

Part of the group - which also includes Crossrail and Network Rail - will visit schools and career fairs, and provide work experience placements in a bid to encourage young people, especially young women, to pursue a career in transport.

A new schools toolkit has also been put together to rally up interest from young blood. The package includes two short films outlining the transport industry’s vital role in everyday society, and various online supporting materials showcasing the variety of roles with transport such as communications, legal, engineering and operational.

TfL’s 100 Years of Women in Transport campaign - launched in November 2014 - has already garnered reasonable success with women currently representing almost a quarter of TfL’s workforce (23 per cent). That’s a healthy leap on the 18 per cent seen in the transport industry throughout the rest of Europe.

Val Shawcross CBE, deputy mayor for transport, said: “Women have always played an integral part in London's transport industry. For the capital to thrive, it is essential that we continue to invest in transport to meet growing demand.”
