XPO Logistics: Time Trials with Tour de France

15 July 2016/Categories: CILT, Industry News, Active Travel & Travel Planning, Freight Forwarding, Logistics & Supply Chain

XPO Logistics is once again serving as the official carrier of the Tour de France, working alongside event organiser Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO) to transport support equipment for all 21 stages of the world’s most famous cycle race.

The 103rd edition of the Tour de France started on 2nd July and is set to finish on 24th July and XPO Logistics' specialist event teams have designed a complete solution that meets the Tour’s logistical and security requirements.

The Tour de France is a ‘tour de force’ of athletic ability that demands unparalleled dedication from those who take part in one of the world’s most spectacular endurance tests. As the official carrier for the Tour de France for the 36th consecutive year, we at XPO Logistics have found that it takes similar dedication to provide the transportation and logistics for an event that spans three weeks and 3,535 kilometres. It also requires a highly specialised skillset, dedicated training sessions and an enormous commitment to success.

During the three weeks of the competition, XPO Logistics will provide transport for all equipment required at the departure and arrival villages; loading and unloading at each stage; intermediate check points; and items for the Caravan parade and the Tour de France shop. The company has dedicated 53 drivers and 44 jumbo trucks to this year’s Tour, with extensive support personnel behind the scenes.

While the Tour route changes each year, XPO Logistics know from experience that the terrain ranges from tight mountain passes to wide roads alongside fields of sunflowers and vineyards – a spectacular vista, but there is little time to admire the view. Each day, the Start and Finish villages must be transported to the correct stage of the race, set up and struck, all before the professional cyclists arrive.

Adil Houem, Head of Event Transportation and Logistics, XPO Logistics, said: "XPO Logistics teams are in a ‘relay race’ with some of the world’s best athletes, the only difference being that our 53 professional drivers and 44 jumbo trucks are carrying 22 tons of equipment, merchandise and other items along the treacherous Tour route, which of course is designed for bicycles.

"Our teams are proud to once again play an instrumental role in the success of the Tour de France. We have tailored our services to this event’s unique specifications, and are working closely with the organizers, ASO, to make sure that everything is in place. The Tour de France is a legendary event and it has been our privilege to serve as official carrier for 36 years.”

When supporting the Tour de France each year, one thing is certain: XPO Logistics will be at the finish line first, making sure the heroes of this prestigious race have nothing to worry about as they collect the accolades they deserve.
