Traffic reduction schemes will be trialled in parts of north London in a bid to make walking and cycling more appealing.

The measures focus on Cycle Superhighway 1 (CS1), which takes in De Beauvoir and other areas in Hackney and mostly runs along roads parallel to the A10 between Tottenham and the City.

To cut down on certain minor roads being ‘rat-runs’, through traffic with be restricted at five junctions in the De Beauvoir Road area, as well as at three junctions around Hackney’s Wordsworth Road.

The trial will last for up to 18 months so that Transport for London (TfL) can assess impact on traffic flow. Residents will be consulted on whether the measures should become permanent.

Alan Bristow, TfL's director of road space management, said the measures should make the affected areas “much nicer places to live, walk and cycle”.

“Reducing traffic in residential areas can make a real difference to the local environment and improve quality of life,” he added.
