Air Cargo Shippers Reroute Freight as Iran War Disrupts Global Supply Chains

EconomicAviationLogistics & Supply ChainNews

Air cargo operators and logistics companies are rushing to adjust their supply chains as the conflict involving Iran disrupts major aviation routes and reduces global freight capacity. Airspace closures and security risks across parts of the Middle East have forced airlines to cancel flights or take longer routes, creating delays and raising costs for businesses that rely on air transport for time-sensitive goods.

The disruption has constrained available aircraft capacity and pushed shipping rates higher, with airlines introducing emergency surcharges and passing on higher fuel and operational costs. Many shippers are now seeking alternative routes, securing charter aircraft or shifting cargo through different hubs in Europe and Asia to keep goods moving.

Airspace restrictions across the region have caused widespread logistical challenges. Flight cancellations and longer detours are increasing fuel consumption and extending transit times, placing additional strain on an already tight air cargo market. According to logistics technology firm WiseTech Global, more than 11,000 air shipments had already been disrupted by early March, affecting hundreds of logistics companies.

Industries that depend heavily on air freight, including electronics, pharmaceuticals and automotive manufacturing, are particularly vulnerable because they rely on rapid delivery to support global supply chains. High-value and temperature-sensitive products are especially exposed to delays when aircraft availability declines.

Despite the challenges, some airlines could benefit in the short term from higher freight rates as demand outstrips available capacity. However, logistics experts warn that prolonged disruption may weaken global trade volumes if higher transport costs and delays begin to affect manufacturing output and consumer demand.

For now, freight forwarders and cargo airlines continue to adapt operations in an effort to minimise disruption while the geopolitical situation remains uncertain.
