Reasons to be cheerful about the future of rail in an uncertain world.

We all want rail to be a success and for it to play its part in enabling economic, environmental and social change. And most of us probably agree that this means the sector needs to change itself to enable better customer experience and value for money. But we shouldn't forget that there are also things to celebrate, that some of the solutions to current problems are well known, and that many of the sector’s underlying strengths are unchanged. So how can we all help to set up the sector for success? And how can we all succeed in that environment? We have lived through an incredible few years and what does this teach about how to plan for whatever comes next?

Paul Plummer, Professor in Rail Strategy. Key areas of research focus on the whole transport system from a customer experience perspective and the implications for policy. Formerly CEO at Rail Delivery Group (RDG), Group Strategy Director at Network Rail and President of European Infrastructure Managers (EIM). Also working as non-executive director and as a mentor.
