"The future of rail in a background of high uncertainty
What is the view of rail outside of the UK – a different perspective"

UK Railways are at a real crossroads. But every challenge is an opportunity. Do we stick, twist or bust? Across the globe, the case for railways is strong, with massive capital investment driving public transport connectivity and decarbonisation. America is on the cusp of a high speed rail revolution. Canada is experiencing unprecedented rail investment and is thinking radically for megaproject delivery. Asia is a powerhouse of cost effective metro. Australia’s level of ambition is next level. In the Middle East rail investment is rising again. Through learning from other regions, how can the UK re-affirm our commitment and capability in railways as a driver of economic growth, connecting communities, and achieving our net zero targets?

As AECOM’s Global Transit Executive Vice President, Russell provides worldwide leadership and strategic direction across $1.2bn of annual Transit revenues. AECOM is the number 1 transit firm by fees in 2023 according to Engineering News-Record. Russell’s focus is on key clients, capability, major programme delivery, large-scale pursuits and industry thought leadership. As Global Transit EVP he leads the strategy for growth in the sector.

Russell with his unique position in one of the world’s largest rail consultancies can provide some real insight into what is going on outside of the UK and what we can learn from our industry colleagues around the world, so that we reinvigorate our rail industry at home.
