The concept of transport chains makes clear that, where any link in the journey chain is missing or broken, it can prevent a person from travelling.

Changing between modes or making any kind of travel connection can be stressful and daunting for all of us. For many disabled and older people, it is often simply impossible because of lack of appropriate infrastructure and support, combined with the unreliability of services.

Planning and good practice in areas as diverse as timetabling, signage, ticketing, physical infrastructure and co-operation between providers, all play a vital part in joining the chain and making journeys achievable. As do first mile/last mile considerations, real time information, communication between services, sheltered travel hubs and buddying services.

This one-day seminar will explore the concerns and difficulties faced by disabled and older people and will look at practical solutions and examples of good practice to achieve joined up journeys.

The OSA Partnership Group aims to raise awareness of the symptoms of a condition called Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA).

When OSA is accompanied by excessive sleepiness, it can be extremely dangerous and lead to drivers falling asleep at the wheel, sometimes with fatal consequences. However treatment is available and is very effective in managing the symptoms so patients who comply with treatment are as safe on the road as any other driver.

However, we know that many drivers are nervous of coming forward because they fear losing their licence. The OSA Partnership Group is working to reduce the chances of this happening by campaigning both for national fast tracking of treatment and voluntary screening programmes supported by employers.

The talk will explain what OSA is, who is most likely to have it and the implications of not seeking treatment. We'll explain the process of getting treatment and access to fast tracking, as well as talking through some case studies of drivers who are now symptom-free and also a transport company that offers screening for all employees.

Theme: Is automation a solution to post-Brexit Britain’s most pressing supply chain challenges?

No matter where you stand on Brexit, it’s likely to have a big impact on UK supply chains, adding to the challenges that logistics service providers and cargo owners are already faced with: from driver shortages and congestion, to rising costs and changes in consumer demand.

Join CILT and its members at the Jaguar Land Rover Experience Centre for a roundtable discussion, sponsored by DP World London Gateway and chaired by CILT’s Kevin Richardson. Discuss the challenges facing the logistics and transportation industry; the challenges of now and the potential challenges of the future – some of which may be exacerbated by Brexit. The event will be chaired by Kevin Richardson, CEO of CILT who joined the Institute from XPO Logistics, formerly Norbert Dentressangle, where he held the role of European Development Director for four years. Prior to that Kevin spent 20 years at TDG Plc progressing from Implementation Director to Strategic Development Director.

An experienced senior logistics executive with over 35 years’ experience in the sector, Kevin has extensive knowledge in operational and project management across Europe and has been a member of the Institute for 28 years.

The Cotton Traders at Prolog relationship began in 2014. Cotton Traders were finding rapid expansion in their ecommerce business alongside changes within their retail offering. This meant their existing warehousing and fulfilment arrangements were not fit for purpose. Growing ecommerce and omni-channel distribution needed to be matched with a smarter, more flexible fulfilment solution. With decreasing delivery times and increasing variability in product mix, order size and volumes, traditional picking processes weren’t delivering the efficiency required to meet the omni-channel distribution challenges.

Cotton Traders deployed RapidPut™, a turnkey fulfilment optimisation solution powered by Dematic iQ software comprised of put walls, conveyors and light or voice technology, to enable a scalable order fulfilment system which would address the dynamic e-commerce and retail environment they operate in.

Designed to be flexible and modular, the chosen solution was implemented quickly, offering a rapid return on Cotton Traders capital investment. It was the first installation of its type to move away from traditional wave based picking addressing many of the challenges faced by suppliers trying to fulfil ecommerce and retail orders with ever increasing SLA requirements and without the need for huge capital investment. Relying upon advanced material flow strategies, it also continually monitors resource utilisation and dynamically adjusts and prioritises work orders and flows to reduce cycle time, labour and unit costs. This helps to minimise the peaks and valleys associated with the traditional wave-based fulfilment solutions. Plus, tight integration with the shop floor provides continual real-time insight into equipment and material flow status at any point in time.

The Cotton Traders at Prolog operation manages more than 30,000 SKUs and 130,000 dynamic pick locations. Circa 6 million retail and ecommerce items are despatched alongside the servicing of 144 retail stores. The aim of the event is to provide an opportunity to see the solution first hand and for attendees to discuss and share how to tackle the challenge of meeting the dual needs of ecommerce and retail in an omni channel environment.
