Prior to his appointment, Gerallt was Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service in Wales.Gerallt worked in private practice in North Wales after qualifying as a solicitor. He joined the Crown Prosecution Service in 1992 and worked as a frontline prosecutor dealing with the full range of criminal prosecution work before moving into management roles. In 2014, Gerallt was appointed Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS London heading up a team of 150 lawyers with responsibility for all Magistrates’ Court prosecutions throughout the capital. Three years later he returned to Wales in the same role. During his career at the CPS, Gerallt was involved in developing policy and guidance on prosecuting road traffic cases as well as acting as a senior decision maker in fatal road traffic collision cases. His appointment as Traffic Commissioner coincided with the start of the pandemic.
