New Transport Secretary announced

07 September 2022/Categories: CILT, Industry News

New Prime Minister Liz Truss has chosen Anne-Marie Trevelyan, MP for Berwick-upon-Tweed, as the new Transport Secretary.

Previously the Secretary of State for International Trade and President of the Board of Trade, Anne-Marie took over from previous Transport Secretary Grant Shapps.

She was also the UK International Champion on Adaptation and Resilience for the COP26 Presidency and was the Minister of State (Minister for Energy, Clean Growth and Climate Change) at the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy from January 2021 to September 2021, and before that was the Secretary of State for International Development from February to September 2020.

She was Minister of State for the Armed Forces from 17 December 2019 to 13 February 2020, and Minister for Defence Procurement from 27 July 2019 to 16 December 2019.

Anne-Marie was first elected as Member of Parliament (MP) for the Berwick-upon-Tweed constituency at the 2015 general election.

A chartered accountant by trade, Anne-Marie sat on the House of Commons’ Public Accounts Committee from July 2015 to May 2017 and December 2018 to July 2019. She has previously served as the Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Secretary of State for Defence. As an MP, she has campaigned with colleagues for greater autism awareness and has focused on the Armed Forces Covenant.

Anne Marie said: “I’m thrilled to have been appointed Transport Secretary. Transport is crucial to our lives – bringing people together, creating jobs and connecting the UK with the world. I’m looking forward to getting to work on the many challenges and opportunities transport brings.”

Sharon Kindleysides, Chief Executive, CILT(UK) said:

“The Institute would like to welcome Anne-Marie Trevelyan as Secretary of State for Transport and we look forward to working with the Secretary of State to ensure that effective transport and logistics policy lies at the heart of government.

“Transport and logistics are crucial to our everyday lives. Our members work tirelessly to ensure the nation has access to critical goods and is connected to jobs and community. We are particularly looking forward to working with the Secretary of State to build on the momentum and impact the government backed Generation Logistics campaign is currently gaining across the industry.

"The CILT acknowledges and thanks outgoing transport secretary Grant Shapps for his work with the industry and the Institute over the past three years.”
