DfT launch new security standards to strengthen fleet security measures

The Department for Transport has launched new security standards for Britain's commercial transport sector in response to growing threats from terrorists and organised crime groups targeting road networks.

The Roads Transport Security Standards (RTSS) will help freight, bus and coach operators protect their vehicles, assets and personnel from theft, hijacking and terrorist attacks, the DfT announced.

Officials said hostile actors are exploiting the road network to conduct criminal activities, with organised crime groups and terrorists posing mounting threats to the transport sector.

The move follows a series of vehicle-based terror attacks on crowded places in recent years, including incidents in Magdeburg, Munich and New Orleans, where terrorists weaponised commercial and private vehicles against civilians.

The RTSS provides an entry point for transport operators and security managers looking to strengthen their defences against terrorism and organised crime threats.

Operators can access the new framework through a dedicated government webpage featuring a comprehensive toolkit and smart survey system. Those completing the survey will receive personalised feedback and improvement recommendations from the Road Transport Security Team.

Transport operators seeking further information can contact the Road Transport Security Team at roadtransportsecurity@dft.gov.uk.
