The government has confirmed funding for over 50 road and rail upgrades across England, backed by £92 billion from the Spending Review settlement. The projects are expected to support 42,000 jobs and facilitate 39,000 new homes.

Five major road schemes have received funding, including the long-awaited A66 Northern Trans-Pennine route and the M54 to M6 link road in Staffordshire.

The M60/M62/M66 Simister Island project in Greater Manchester could support 20,000 new jobs and 7,000 new homes, whilst the A38 Derby Junctions scheme will support 15,400 new homes.

Rail improvements include reinstating passenger services between Bristol city centre and Portishead after more than 60 years, with £27 million allocated for the hourly service connecting 50,000 additional people to the rail network.

The Midlands Rail Hub will create new rail links for over 50 locations and generate nearly 13,000 construction jobs.

New stations at Wellington, Cullompton, and Haxby have been approved, with the latter bringing 20,000 people within 3km of railway access.

The East Coast Main Line will receive upgraded digital signalling, expected to reduce delays by one third and create 4,800 new supply chain roles.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said: "Transport is the backbone of our economy, which is why we are giving them the record funding boost they need, putting taxpayers' money where it matters most and making everyday journeys easier."

The investment includes £10.2 billion for rail enhancements and £24 billion for motorways, trunk roads and local roads.

Additionally, 28 local road schemes will continue, including the Middlewich Eastern Bypass and A382 Drumbridges to Newton Abbot projects.
