The government is looking to introduce new ‘skills escalators’ for every NHS staff member as part of its 10 Year Workforce Plan expected to be published later this year.

This was revealed in the government’s ‘Fit for the Future’ 10-Year Health Plan for England, published this month (July 2025).

It pledges all NHS staff will have their own personalised career coaching and development plan by 2035.

According to the Department for Health and Social Care, the plan “will help staff acquire new skills and practice at the top of their professional capability.”

The government also announced it “will partner with technology firms and academic institutions to develop a new digitally led platform for education, skills and training.”

Commenting of the announcement a CILT(UK) spokesperson said: “The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC)’s Fit for the Future: 10 Year Health Plan for England outlines how they intend to develop a new model of NHS care that remains true to the founding principles of universal care, free at the point of delivery. 

“CILT(UK) welcomes recognition within the plan of the critical role of workforce development in delivering change and the continued commitment to working with “educational institutions to overhaul education and training curricula” in the next three years. 

“The NHS-CILT(UK) Learning and Development Academy - CILT(UK) is an example of the important role that logistics training and professional development is playing to “future proof the NHS workforce, ensuring staff leave formal training fully prepared to work in a modern healthcare system”.
