The Tyne and Wear Metro has the fastest growing passenger numbers in the country outside of London.
There were 38.1 million journeys on the Metro in the twelve months until the end of March 2015 - a 6.7% rise, according to the Department of Transport.
The figures were released in a Government report into the performance of England's light rail and tram systems.
Nexus, the public body which owns and manages Metro, said the growth in passenger numbers was down to ticket prices being kept low and because of the improving economic climate.
The Metro's passenger growth was only bettered by the Docklands Light Railway in London.
