Leaders at Heathrow Airport have pledged to take a proactive approach towards reducing noise pollution at the site.

In a report entitled 'A quieter Heathrow', managers said they would get tough on airlines and those that are too loud could receive heavier fines. Companies would also be ranked based on their noise performance.

As well as this, Heathrow will work closely with the local community in order to make living conditions more bearable. In addition to spending the money accrued from noise penalties on local initiatives, a social media platform could be set up to warn residents about any schedule changes.

Heathrow is already the world's busiest airport and some aviation experts expect additional runways to be built at the site in the future, although this decision ultimately lies with the Airports Commission. 

Chief executive officer at Heathrow Colin Matthews said the airport takes noise pollution very seriously and despite the fact the number of flights landing at the London hub has almost doubled since the 1970s, fewer people are affected by loud aeroplanes.
