Last year, Railway 200 celebrated the bicentenary of the Stockton & Darlington railway. May 1826 saw the opening of the Monkland &

Kirkintilloch railway, which by emulating the Stockton & Darlington railway in the use of malleable iron rails able to take the weight of

steam locomotives can claim to be Scotland's first modern railway. Renowned local historian Don Martin will tell us the story of this

pioneering line, whose legacy continues to be felt today in North Lanarkshire and East Dunbartonshire.
