Freight Matters – Triple Access Planning for Goods Movement
CILT
Speaker: Daniela Paddeu, Associate Professor of Sustainable Freight Futures, University of West of England (UWE) Why Freight Matters: A Spotlight Session with Dr Daniela Paddeu Join us for an inspiring and insight‑rich session with Dr Daniela Paddeu, Associate Professor of Sustainable Freight Futures at UWE Bristol and a leading researcher in innovative and sustainable freight transport. With extensive experience across UK and European research programmes, Dr Paddeu brings a wealth of knowledge on how freight shapes our daily lives, our economy, and the future of transport policy. In this session, Daniela will explore why freight matters for everyone—from citizens and businesses to planners, policymakers, and professionals working at the interface of goods movement. She will highlight how freight is often overlooked in decision‑making, relegated to the dreaded afterthought of “…and freight”, and why this mindset must change. Taking centre stage will be Daniela’s work within the Triple Access Planning for Uncertain Futures consortium—a major pan‑European partnership advancing new approaches to mobility planning by integrating physical mobility, spatial proximity, and digital connectivity into more resilient, future‑ready frameworks. Daniela will also share insights from her latest research projects, illustrating the critical role freight plays in sustainable transport systems, decarbonisation, and shaping thriving, adaptable urban environments. If you work in transport, logistics, planning, sustainability, or simply want to better understand the systems that keep society moving, this session promises to be both eye‑opening and essential. Although aimed at the Welsh market the content will be equally applicable to the whole of the UK.

The Warehouse of the Future: Why Logistics Shapes Modern Life
CILT
Speakers: Clare Bottle FCILT, Chief Executive, UKWA Warehouses are among the least visible yet most consequential pieces of modern infrastructure. They sit behind our online shopping, food supply, manufacturing systems and energy transition, shaping how economies function and how societies live. In this lecture, Clare Bottle, CEO of the UK Warehousing Association, explores how the role of the warehouse is changing in response to major global pressures: population growth, shifting consumer behaviour, automation, labour shortages, cybersecurity, and the urgent demand for renewable energy. Drawing on more than 25 years in operational logistics, Clare examines why warehouses are no longer just places to store goods, but complex socio-technical systems that integrate property, people, technology and power. The talk will look at: How consumer expectations and asset-light lifestyles are reshaping supply chains The rise of automation, AI and cybersecurity risks inside warehouses The growing energy demands of logistics and why warehouses matter to the net-zero transition The skills required to manage these systems, and the role of warehouse managers The social impact of warehousing, including employment and community value This lecture will be of interest to students of geography, economics, business, engineering, sustainability, planning, social policy and of course logistics!
