The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport UK (CILT UK) was delighted to attend the 200th anniversary of the opening of the Menai Suspension Bridge that links mainland Wales with the Isle of Anglesey at an event lead by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).

Also in attendance were representatives and leaders from the Welsh Government, local Councils, and professional institutions such as the Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT) and The Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE).

Having first opened to traffic on 30 January 1826, the milestone was marked with the unveiling of a plaque honouring Thomas Telford, the first ICE President who built the impressive structure with the cooperation of Peter Barlow, William Hazledine and, later, Davis Gilbert.

It was therefore fitting that the Keynote speech was made by the current ICE President, David Porter, along with Kerry Evans, Menai Bridge Community Heritage Trust Trustee, at the Thomas Telford Museum.

ICE President, David Porter, said: “The bridge is a hugely important part of the transport system in Wales, not only for those that live and work in the surrounding area but for the thousands of journeys made using it on the strategic road network.

“It is more than just a feat of engineering, it is a structure that is relied on by numerous people each and every day and is also a connection between the past with the present,” added David.

The bridge is used by half a million vehicles a year. To local people it is source of pride and is one of the most recognisable structures in the UK. To keep it fit to deal with increasing traffic loads the bridge was reconstructed in 1942, and it remains standing today.

Representing CILT(UK) at the event was Institute Chair Anna-jane Hunter and Welsh National Chair, Michael Whittaker.

Michael Whittaker said: “Celebrating 200 years of the Menai Suspension Bridge reminds us how visionary infrastructure shapes communities and economies for generations. As a vital link for people, trade and tourism across North Wales, it continues to highlight the importance of resilient, well-designed transport networks. It was a privilege for CILT(UK) to join partners in recognising both its remarkable heritage and its ongoing role in supporting connectivity across Wales.”

Anna-jane Hunter added: “It was an honour to be involved in such an historic event marking the 200th anniversary of this iconic bridge and the rich history behind the significance of its construction that continues to play a key role in the movement of people and goods in Wales toady.”
