Planning permission granted to ‘futureproof’ Liverpool Street Station

Projects & PeopleRailTransport PlanningNews

Network Rail has confirmed planning permission has been granted to “futureproof” Liverpool Street station following an application that was submitted last May to the Planning Committee of the City of London.

The station was last redeveloped in 1991, and customer numbers have tripled over the last 35 years.

Liverpool Street Station’s major redevelopment plan is expected to manage heightened passenger demand and is designed to serve more than 200 million commuters and visitors in the decades ahead.

For passengers this means upgraded facilities such as more ticket barriers, wider platforms, more escalators, lifts, lounges and toilets.

According to the City of London, plans are also set to unlock new opportunities for growth at the heart of the Square Mile.

Proposals include ensuring the station is fully accessible alongside new office space, a wide variety of shops and cafes, improved pedestrian routes with cycle friendly landscaping and greening.

Energy‑efficient design and low‑carbon construction methods are also expected to be used throughout development.

Policy Chairman of the City of London Corporation, Chris Hayward, said plans “will support the City’s dynamic business ecosystem with state-of-the-art infrastructure, create new jobs and strengthen our position as a world‑leading destination, while ensuring that residents, workers and visitors all benefit from a modern, inclusive and future‑focused transport hub.”

Ellie Burrows, Managing Director for Network Rail's Eastern region added: "Our plans focus on improving the everyday experience for passengers whilst respecting the station's unique heritage.

“With annual passenger numbers forecast to grow to 158 million, this approval ensures the station will be future proofed for decades to come.”

Both Network Rail and the City of London have yet to confirm the timeframe for when the development plans are expected to commence and when they will be completed.
