Welsh rail network set for major expansion with seven new stations

Policy & GovernmentRailNews

The UK and Welsh Governments have jointly announced a long-term commitment to transform Wales' rail network, including the construction of seven new stations and a funding package understood to total up to £14 billion across a pipeline of future projects.

The Prime Minister formally endorsed Transport for Wales' long-term vision on 18 February 2026, with the 2025 Spending Review having already allocated at least £445 million to rail enhancements in Wales during the current spending period.

Seven new stations are planned:

• Magor and Undy

• Llanwern

• Cardiff East

• Newport West

• Somerton

• Cardiff Parkway

• Deeside Industrial Park

The five South East Wales stations are aimed at easing congestion on the M4 corridor, with work set to begin this year and Magor and Undy expected to be the first completed.

Cardiff Parkway, near St Mellons, is projected to service around 800,000 passengers annually and unlock approximately 6,000 jobs through its associated business park.

Separately, £59.8 million has been allocated to transform Cardiff Central station, with work due to begin in spring 2026.

In North Wales, infrastructure improvements on the Wrexham–Liverpool line are expected to enable two trains per hour, while a £30 million investment will deliver safety upgrades along the North Wales coast, including a 50% increase in services from May 2026.

The programme is estimated to support 12,000 jobs across Wales.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said: "This isn't tinkering nor sticking plasters. This is investment for the long term and change communities will feel."
