The Government supports plans to introduce 20mph speed limits in new housing developments, following recommendations to promote active travel and reduce car usage.

Homes England, the Government’s housing and regeneration agency, has called for this speed limit, asking for this change to be supported by street geometry and traffic calming.

Their report proposes making roads narrower, introducing more cycle lanes and having tighter corners to reduce speeds on new housing estates – recommending the promoting of car clubs to support the reduction of private car ownership and for one cycle space to be made available for every bedroom in a development.

The reports’ purpose is to help residents, developers, councillors and planning officers create “successful, healthy liveable places”.

Dr Jeanelle de Gruchy, the UK government’s Deputy Chief Medical Officer, endorsed the report - claiming that the guidance is a useful toolkit to ensure that healthy decisions are accessible for all and embedded into everyday life.

A government spokesman said that Labour wants to ensure that the public have the opportunity to obtain reliable, affordable and accessible transport.
