A major new rail freight hub has opened at Segro’s logistics park in Northamptonshire, marking a significant expansion of the UK’s rail-connected distribution network. The seven-hectare terminal, developed by Maritime Transport at Segro Logistics Park Northampton, was inaugurated on 27 February in the presence of rail minister Lord Hendy and industry representatives.

The facility is Maritime’s ninth Strategic Rail Freight Interchange and has been built with direct links to the West Coast Main Line via the Northampton loop. Designed to handle the UK’s longest and heaviest freight trains, it can accommodate up to 16 daily services and store more than 2,500 containers on site. Segro has invested over £80M in rail infrastructure across the wider development.

Connected to the national network in 2025, the terminal soon launched a weekday intermodal service to DP World Southampton. The route is notable as the first regular freight operation to use the reinstated Oxford–Bletchley section of East West Rail, creating a new east–west logistics corridor across central England.

Located near Junction 15 of the M1 within the logistics “golden triangle”, the 240-hectare park is set to deliver around 465,000m² of warehousing space, with rail at its core.

The opening also underscored Maritime’s low-emission ambitions. Through its Maritime Zero division and involvement in the government’s Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrator programme, the company is rolling out electric heavy goods vehicles and high-powered charging infrastructure, aiming to integrate zero-emission road transport with rail services at the new hub.
