Network Rail submits fresh bid to ‘future‑proof’ Liverpool Street station

Network Rail has submitted a new application to redevelop London Liverpool Street station, aiming to make it “fit for the future” as passenger numbers are predicted to soar.

The station currently handles about 118 million journeys a year across London, East Anglia and the east of England. Forecasts suggest this will rise to 158 million by 2041.

Under Network Rail’s revised “future‑proof” plan, Liverpool Street would be able to serve more than 200 million passengers a year. The project is expected to cost hundreds of millions of pounds.

An earlier scheme was rejected in 2023 after more than 2,000 objections from members of the public, Westminster City Council and Historic England. In the latest consultation, however, nearly 2,000 comments were received, and three‑quarters supported the new proposals. Respondents highlighted three key priorities, foremost among them full station accessibility.

Planned improvements include step‑free routes, additional lifts serving both the mainline and Underground platforms, and new toilet facilities with family‑friendly spaces on every level.

Robin Dobson, Group Property Director for Network Rail Property, said: “We’re proud to be leading a transformative scheme for Liverpool Street station – one that creates a truly accessible and inclusive space, can accommodate the anticipated rise to more than 200 million passengers a year, and delivers vital improvements to the everyday experience while respecting and celebrating the station’s historic character.

“Investing in transport infrastructure is essential to unlocking economic growth for London and beyond. This investment will ensure Liverpool Street remains a landmark gateway to the City for generations to come.

“Following extensive consultation with a wide range of stakeholders, our plans put passengers first whilst retaining the station’s Victorian features, including the iconic trainshed and the Great Eastern Hotel.”

Further details of the design proposals and enhanced accessibility measures are available on Network Rail’s website.
