Professional success is rarely built by academic qualifications alone. It is strengthened by lifelong learning, meaningful professional networks, continuous professional development, and a commitment to serving one's profession. My journey with the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT(UK)) over the past two decades demonstrates how sustained engagement with a respected professional body can shape an international career spanning academia, research, industry engagement, and global leadership.

My CILT(UK) journey began in 2006 when I enrolled in the CILT(UK)-approved MSc Global Logistics and Supply Chain Management programme at the University of Huddersfield, United Kingdom. Like many aspiring logistics professionals, I viewed CILT(UK) membership not merely as an academic requirement but as an opportunity to become part of a globally respected professional community.

As a CILT(UK) Graduate Student Member, I gained access to valuable professional resources, including the Institute's extensive online library, technical publications, and opportunities to participate in CILT chapter events across the United Kingdom. These experiences complemented my academic studies by exposing me to contemporary industry practices, professional debates, and networking opportunities with experienced practitioners.

The combination of academic learning and professional engagement laid a solid foundation for what would become an international career in logistics and supply chain management.

Following the completion of his master's degree, I continued my membership while undertaking doctoral research at the University of Huddersfield.

The PhD period represented an important stage in my professional development. Membership of CILT(UK) enabled me to remain connected to emerging developments in logistics, transport, maritime operations, and supply chain management while conducting advanced research.

Participation in CILT(UK) activities also broadened my opportunities to exchange ideas with academics, consultants, policymakers, and industry leaders. This interaction between research and professional practice helped reinforce the importance of producing research that addresses real-world logistics and transport challenges.

By 2012, I had transitioned into academia as a Lecturer at the University of Plymouth, United Kingdom. My continued involvement with CILT(UK) reflected a belief that professional learning should not end upon entering into professorial careers.

As an academic responsible for preparing future logistics and supply chain professionals, my CILT(UK) membership provided ongoing access to professional insights, industry developments, and a global network of practitioners. These connections enriched both my teaching and research by ensuring that classroom discussions reflected current industry realities.

This period also marked increasing contributions to research, publication, curriculum development, and collaboration with colleagues across higher education and industry.

Today, I continue this professional journey as an Associate Professor of Supply Chain Operations Management at Metro State University in Minnesota, USA, while remaining actively connected to CILT(UK) as a global member.

My career now extends across teaching, research, international collaboration, conference leadership, editorial responsibilities, and professional service. Through these roles, I continue to promote the values that CILT(UK) has long championed: professionalism, competence, ethical practice, innovation, and lifelong learning.

One recent example is my role as Chair of the 2026 Supply Chain Management Directors' Conference, hosted at Metro State University. The conference brought together educators, industry leaders, and professionals from across the United States and internationally to discuss pressing issues affecting supply chains, workforce development, community engagement, and the future of logistics education. Such initiatives illustrate how the professional networks and values fostered through CILT(UK) membership can create positive ripple effects that extend well beyond individual career advancement.

Looking back over nearly twenty years, my career illustrates that CILT(UK) membership is far more than an annual subscription. It represents a long-term investment in professional growth.

Throughout different stages of his career, student, doctoral researcher, lecturer, and now Associate Professor, CILT(UK) has provided continuity through access to knowledge, professional networks, leadership opportunities, and an international community committed to advancing logistics and transport.

In a profession where technologies, supply chains, and global trade continue to evolve rapidly, remaining connected to a respected professional institution provides members with opportunities to continually learn, contribute, and grow.

As supply chains become increasingly global, digital, and interconnected, the role of professional bodies such as CILT(UK) becomes even more significant. They provide a platform where academics, practitioners, policymakers, and future professionals can collaborate to solve complex transport and logistics challenges.

Celebrating nearly two decades of flourishing engagement with CILT(UK), my journey serves as an encouraging example for students, early-career professionals, and experienced practitioners alike. My experience demonstrates that sustained involvement in a professional institution can support not only personal career progression but also wider contributions to education, research, industry, and society.
