Sarah Russell CMILT
Operations Manager, MOD
"Having served for 23 years in the Royal Air Force within Logistics, CILT has been a consistent and influential part of my professional journey. From the earliest stages of my career, through initial trade training and apprenticeships, right up to positions of greater responsibility, the principles aligned with CILT were embedded throughout. This foundation supported my technical development while reinforcing the importance of professionalism, structure, and continuous improvement.
During my service, I saw first-hand how critical logistics is to operational success. Whether supporting deployed operations or maintaining supply chains in more stable environments, the ability to plan, adapt, and deliver under pressure was essential. The frameworks and standards associated with CILT played an important role in shaping these capabilities, ensuring consistency and a clear focus on best practice across the profession.
Over time, I have also observed how the logistics sector has evolved, particularly with the increasing pace of technological change. The use of digital systems, improved data management, and a stronger focus on efficiency and sustainability are transforming the way logistics is delivered. Watching how the civilian sector continues to innovate has been especially valuable, particularly when considering long-term career development beyond the military.
As I approached the end of my RAF career, I focused on ensuring my experience remained relevant and transferable. As part of my resettlement, I completed a Level 5 qualification, which proved essential in bridging military and civilian logistics practices. This qualification enabled me to transition smoothly into the Civil Service within the Ministry of Defence, allowing me to apply my experience in a new environment while continuing to develop professionally.
CILT has provided a consistent framework throughout my career, supporting both progression and transition. It has reinforced the importance of lifelong learning and demonstrated the value of recognised professional standards across sectors.
Looking ahead, I am confident that the logistics profession will continue to evolve in response to new challenges and opportunities. The need for skilled, adaptable professionals will remain critical, and organisations like CILT will play a key role in supporting that development."
