Bus and tram fare freeze extended into Autumn

The mayor of London, Sir Sadiq Khan, and Transport for London (TfL) have announced that single bus and tram fares across London are to be frozen at £1.75 for another four months.

The original freeze was announced in March and had been due to end on Sunday 5 July, but has now been extended until Sunday 1 November.

The reason for the freeze extension, according to the mayor of London, is to keep TfL services as affordable as possible, alleviating some of the pressures of the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.

In May, a weekend ‘hopper’ fare was announced, meaning that travellers can pay £1.75 for unlimited bus and tram journeys on Saturdays and Sundays from Saturday 25 July to the end of August.

Single bus and tram fares are expected to rise in November by 10p to £1.85, while the daily fare cap is set to rise by 30p to £5.55. This will bring bus and tram fares in line with the similar increases to Tube fares that were made in March.

Throughout recent years, London bus and tram fares have been frozen several times and therefore have remained at the same price since March 2023. If the fares had increased in line with inflation since 2016, the TfL has said that they would be £2.35 today.

Alex Williams, Chief Customer and Strategy Officer at TfL, said that he hoped the extended fare freeze and weekend hopper scheme would encourage more public transport use across London this summer and boost the economy.
