The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport in the UK (CILT(UK)) was proud to join industry leaders, government officials and local stakeholders on Saturday 8 August to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Menai Suspension Bridge – an enduring symbol of connectivity.
Representing CILT(UK) at the bicentenary event was Helen Hardy, CEO, who delivered a speech reflecting on the bridge's lasting contribution, supporting trade and demonstrating the vital role transport plays in economic prosperity. The event also marked the birthday of renowned engineer, Thomas Telford, whose pioneering vision changed travel between mainland Wales and Anglesey which also helped create gateway of trade and connectivity with Ireland via Holyhead Port.
The celebration also comes during a landmark year for CILT(UK), as the Institute marks 100 years since being awarded its Royal Charter, highlighting the enduring importance of innovation, professional excellence and investment in transport infrastructure.
Helen explained: "The Menai Suspension Bridge is far more than an engineering triumph. It represents the power of transport to connect people, places and business. Two centuries after it first opened, its story continues to remind us why resilient, well-managed transport networks remain fundamental to the prosperity of Wales and the wider UK. It was an honour for CILT(UK) to take part in today's celebrations during such a significant year for both the bridge and our Institute.
Also attending was Michael Whittaker FCILT, CILT(UK) National Chair of Wales, and Rhun ap Iorwerth, First Minister of Wales. Michael added: "The Menai Suspension Bridge has stood for 200 years because of remarkable engineering, but its real legacy is the connection it continues to provide for communities and businesses every day.
“I want to thank First Minister of Wales for his support during the event. As we look to the future, it reminds us of the importance of investing in transport infrastructure and supporting future generations. CILT(UK) is proud to celebrate this remarkable milestone alongside our partners across Wales."
Today's celebration recognised not only its remarkable past but also the continued collaboration needed to preserve and enhance critical transport infrastructure for the future.
