We were saddened to hear of the death of Lord Peter Snape of Wednesbury, a long-serving MP who recently passed away at the age of 84.
Peter Snape, a former railwayman, was a leader of Bredbury and Romiley Urban District Council from 1971 to 1974. He represented West Bromwich East from 1974 to 2001, serving as a government whip from 1977 to 1979, and became a life peer in the House of Lords in 2004.
Bredbury and Romiley Urban District Council told the BBC that Lord Snape was awarded the title of ‘Honorary Freeman of Sandwell’ in 2009 for his outstanding service to the borough over many decades.

“Lord Peter Snape was an outstanding supporter of the bus industry, as a staunch trade unionist he always had social inclusion as a priority. He used his time in government both in the House of Commons and the House of Lords to champion the bus industry, which he did very effectively for decades.
“He was a rare breed a very astute politician, who understood the world of politics better than most. He was also a man with a great sense of humour and was always great company. We owe Lord Peter Snape a debt of thanks for the great work that he did throughout his life and our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.”
