The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT UK) has published a new report analysing the Airports National Policy Statement (ANPS) issued by the Government in June 2018.
Authored by CILT UK's Aviation Policy Group, the report proposes a new policy document to replace the current ANPS and Making Best Use of Existing Runways (MBU) policies.
Whilst acknowledging that such a document should undergo thorough analysis, consultation, and scrutiny, CILT UK emphasise that this paper aims to highlight key issues requiring attention.
CILT UK Aviation Policy Group Chair, Paul Le Blond FCILT said: "The aviation landscape has changed dramatically since the ANPS was issued six years ago.
“Our report explores the need for a comprehensive, forward-looking policy that addresses the complex challenges facing UK aviation today.”
“By analysing key factors mentioned in our report, we advise a need for a flexible framework that can adapt to the rapidly evolving demands of the sector while balancing environmental concerns with economic growth.”
The Institute recommends an updated comprehensive document covering the entire UK, outlining a strategy for the next 10-15 years.
CILT UK believes this approach will provide a more holistic and forward-looking aviation policy for the UK.
The report examines:
- Forecasts and scenarios
- Climate change
- Air freight
- Surface access
- Noise pollution
- Additional environmental impacts
- Economic and social benefits
- Airport ownership
- Smaller airports
- Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and Urban Air Mobility (UAM)
CILT UK, Director of Public Policy and Communications, Daniel Parker-Klein added: "This report represents CILT UK's commitment to help shape a sustainable and efficient future for the UK aviation sector.
“By proposing a comprehensive policy update, we're aiming to foster an aviation sector that's not only economically viable but also environmentally responsible and adaptable to technological advancements."
